 | 02:23 pm - On my way home! I'm waiting in the Las Vegas airport for my flight. I swear, this has been the longest short week ever! But now I get to go home and sleep in my own bed and be in normal temperatures meant for decent human beings. *laughs*
Fourth of July tomorrow. I think I'll be pretty much spending the day over at Corli's to work on costumes and watch lots of all-American movies. Movies like 1776, the John Adams miniseries, Shut Up and Sing...and probably Team America and some episodes of South Park. 'Cause that's what America's all about. ;) Current Mood: exhausted

 | 09:40 pm - More Joy Day is Tomorrow So July 3 has been designated More Joy Day.
Can I do something to make you a bit happier?
I can bake, sew, knit and crochet, arrange flowers, and I've even been known to fold an origami crane or two (or two hundred). I have pretty good wedding-fu info skillz. I can write a little, prose or poetry (but I'm probably a better editor). I even help people move, voluntarily.
Please let me know in a comment, an email or even a phone call.

 | 03:16 pm - What not to do So y'know those generic square frosted overhead light fixtures that cover 2 lightbulbs?
Well there was one over my bed in my bedroom and at one point, it got hit and cracked, but didn't break (even with fiddling with it), so I left it. That was a few months ago.
Yesterday I went to put the duvet back on the bed and flicked it too high and it hit the fixture, breaking it and sending about a 1/3 chunk at my arm. I will save the (somewhat) gory details and just say that it was big enough for stitches, but they weren't necessary (yay steristrips!) due to the cleanliness and depth of the cut. Reg came to my rescue and retrieved the proper medical supplies from the store while I kept pressure on it and sat on the floor in a cool place. I would also like to state that it is hard to hold a cellphone to your ear while holding the underside of your forearm both with pressure and trying to keep it up. :P
Have I mentioned that I really like having friends close by? And medically trained ones at that ^_^ Current Mood: blah Current Music: Ozric Tentacles - Aramanu

 | 07:55 am - oooh! Well, the wheel has come back around in PC Gaming (Or I just started paying attention again ;)
First Spore is finally on its polish phase (Rel Date 7 Sept), which is going to be the productivity suck for me given my tweaker permutation nature.
Then I saw that DiabloIII is going to be release (sometime in 2009 probably; post Starcraft2 and the latest WoW expansion). The amount of time devoted to DiabloII was higher than anything short of the Civ titles, so I'm looking forward to seeing what they do with the title.
And all of this is now making me wonder when to upgrade my GPUs. I have an SLi 6600GT setup that seems to be doing well so far, but I'm waiting for a card that beats my SLi in one card or for an SLi replacement of 2 cheap cards that is worth it (the 9600GTs are close enough to have made me start paying attention for the latter and the GTX260 on the former) Current Location: Redmond, WA Current Music: KJ Sawka - Scrappin'

 | 09:06 pm - Wham Jam Thank You Ma'am We made more jam on Saturday. But, we got smart and made huge batches!
First, we...ahem..."borrowed" most of the fruit off our neighbor's plum tree. To be fair, they were renters and just moved out last week, so it would have gone to waste. But we had to be all James Bond about it!

Then the usual jam-making machinations ensued:

Holy crap we made a lot! I saved a bunch of my half, but I will be mailing/giving away some to those deemed worthy this week.

Flavors we made: Apricot Vanilla Bean Apricot Lavender Apricot "Ham Jam" with fresh herb infused sugar Plum Vanilla Bean Plain Plum Current Mood: listless

It would also be the 2-year anniversary of her son's death in Iraq.

 | 06:56 pm - ??? I have no clue what weight I am because I've had so much going on and I've been sick and I just didn't get on that scale on Sunday. But I will this Sunday. I'm probably not going to like it, but it is what it is and I am actually looking to change that.
Starting next Monday I'm going to join a gym that my co-worker goes to during lunch three times a week. Unlike me, the dude actually LOVES exercise (maybe it's in his gay genes) so that will be a great motivator. $20 a month, from month-to-month, with $100 startup fee. Not bad I say! 30 minutes for 3 times a week is better than what I have been doing--nothing. Still walking, although not this week because I was out cold from a cold. As a result I haven't been eating much. The heat and the smoke in the air just makes me not want to eat.
Anyway, not much else to report. As you might have read already, Anna is going vegan for a while in July, and I really wanted to do it with her, mostly for support and to see if I could actually starting losing. But alas, I'd have to tweak all my insulin rates and I'd have to check with the doc and blah blah blah and it's just not worth it unless I wanna go vegan fo' life. Which I definitely do NOT want to do. :P
In any case, I'm supporting Anna all the way and I'm very curious to see how she'll do! I told her to post her experiences while she's on THE VEGAN CLEANSE!
Here's to a better week! xoxoxo Current Mood: sick

 | 08:15 am - Our Scale Died Ok, not really-it just ran out of batteries, but at this point I have no clue what I weigh anymore until we get replacements. I am hoping God magically places me at 175lbs and calls it a day!
J and I are employing a new strategy-we had a long conversation about motivation and why we’re not doing as well as we should be. A lot of it is just straight-up WW fatigue. There is only so many times you can get excited about all the different ways to use Laughing Cow Light cheese. I think the biggest thing for me is boredom. It seems no matter how you sauce it, grill it or cook it, a boneless skinless chicken breast is still just that. I wish carnitas were considered lean protein!
We decided that part of our problem also is just being tired from work. I work 3 days a week, but I’m there on average 10+ hours a day, and stressed the whole time. When I get home I simply want to lay down in bed and read. We decided that to combat this we’ll start taking workout clothes to work and getting dressed there before we leave-that way we can come home, crate Winston and take off to hike or swim. We employed this for the first time last night-I changed into my suit at work, and we did swim even though neither of us particularly wanted to. So that was a good start.
To combat the boredom of food, I’m thinking of doing a vegan cleanse for 21 days. I know myself too well and I understand that doing something radical like the Master Cleanse would not work for me. But the vegan cleanse is something I could do. I’m not a big fan of veganism, but the cleanse for me would be not so much about the philosophy of being vegan. It would be more a reset button for my body-a way to get it moving again in a downward manner. I seem to be cursed with plateaus that last for months. Perhaps this will be a good way to get rid of that…
Just trying to keep going. How is everyone else doing? Anyone having the same problems? Current Mood: frustrated

 | 07:59 pm - [SLO Area] Thursday Karaoke Expedition 6/26/08 Lorrie and I were talking at the BarCrawl this past weekend. We've both been feeling like we've been doing the same old thing a lot lately.
I like Karaoke. You like Karaoke. We do the usual Friday and Saturday spots, but it's "the usual". So, let's do something different this week. Let's do a Thursday at Harry's in Pismo Beach. Front Row Karaoke posted on MySpace that he'll be there this week (and next), and he's got a great book. This week would be ideal, since next week Pismo will be chock-full of tourists.
Thursday June, 26, 2008, 9:00pm. Harry's Bar in Pismo. Yeah, it's a school night, but if we get there early enough, we should be able to get a few rounds in and be able to get home before turning into pumpkins.
See you there!

 | 09:09 pm - Fiber Arts and Small-Scale Economics I was thinking this morning about how interestingly people view the economics of fiber arts. Basically, a lot of people are surprised that hand-knitting a sweater costs more than buying one in a store. Likewise, home sewing most clothing costs more. I tell people you don't get it any cheaper, but you do get what you want.
On the one hand, you'd think it would be obvious from some basic economic principles. Capitalism tends to drive down the cost of things built in quantity. You get economies of scale. Almost anything produced as a unique item will cost more. So, capitalism optimizes the price of the identical t-shirt everyone buys much better than it optimizes the cost of a unique sweater. Supplies are vastly cheaper in quantity, too, so even if you take consideration of the price of my time out of the picture, a hand-knitted sweater will still cost more than a machine-knitted one, because the difference in price of the yarn is quite large.
On the other hand, it's likely that it's yet another example of fiber arts being undervalued, probably because they're seen as crafts. I haven't seen terribly many people confused as to why hand-made furniture costs more than something from IKEA.
